Why this matters

How this part of SEO supports visibility and customer decisions.

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries at the top of some Google results, with links to sources. AI Mode is a separate, chat-style Google search for longer questions and comparisons. Both can answer a question without a click.

Quick factual questions are the searches most likely to be answered on the results page. Your job is to be accurate and easy to cite, not to game a new system. Google says no special optimization is needed.

Recommended practices

What good work looks like.

01

Know how it's reported

Search Console's Generative AI performance report, available to all sites since August 31, 2026, shows how often your pages appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode. It shows impressions only, not clicks or queries. Clicks from AI features are still counted inside the regular Web totals, so also watch for impressions holding steady while clicks fall.

02

Write answers that are easy to quote

Answer common questions plainly near the top of the matching page. Hypothetical example: “We repair tank and tankless water heaters across Lake County. Most repairs are finished the same day.” Publish only what's true.

03

Keep business facts identical everywhere

AI answers draw on websites, business profiles, directories, and reviews. Make your name, address, phone, hours, and services match on your site, Google, Bing Places, Apple Business (formerly Apple Business Connect), and major directories.

04

Earn mentions from trusted sources

Reviews, local news coverage, trade associations, and supplier directories give people and AI systems independent confirmation of what you do and where.

05

Cover other assistants with the same basics

ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot also search the web and cite sources. Keep your Bing Places listing accurate. Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI Performance report showing Copilot citations.

What to do next

A practical checklist.

  1. 01

In Search Console, compare clicks and impressions with last year for question-style queries.

  2. 02

Search your ten most common customer questions and note who any AI Overview cites.

  3. 03

Add a short, direct answer to each common question on the matching page.

  4. 04

Check that your name, address, phone, and hours match on your site and every listing.

  5. 05

Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and review its AI Performance report.

Avoid these shortcuts

Mistakes that cost visibility or trust.

  • Paying for “GEO” or “AI SEO” services that guarantee AI citations
  • Adding special AI files or markup Google says it doesn't need
  • Publishing thin question pages written only to be quoted by AI
  • Reading a click drop as a ranking drop without checking impressions

Search visibility, rankings, enhanced results, calls, leads, and revenue depend on demand, competition, the website's starting point, and factors outside any agency's control. Results are not guaranteed.

Questions business owners ask

Direct answers for this part of SEO.

01Do I need special markup or an llms.txt file for AI Overviews?

No. Google says there are no extra requirements, special structured data, or new files needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Normal SEO basics apply.

02Can I keep my pages out of AI Overviews?

Yes. Since August 31, 2026, Search Console has a Search generative AI setting that removes a site from AI Overviews and AI Mode; Google says it isn't used as a ranking signal for the rest of Search. Blocking Google-Extended does not do this. Most local businesses should stay included, because opted-out sites get no traffic from these features. See our guide to AI crawlers and website access for details.

03Can anyone guarantee my business appears in AI answers?

No. Google and other AI providers decide which sources to show, and answers vary by question and person. Treat a citation guarantee as a warning sign.
