Hypothetical example: a dental practice gets a pitch promising to "get you recommended by ChatGPT." Before signing, the owner sends these questions and asks for written answers.
- What exactly will you measure?
- A good answer: how often your business is mentioned across repeated runs of a fixed prompt list, and whether the facts are right. A weak answer: a single "AI rank" or "visibility score" with no method.
- Which first-party reports will you use?
- Google Search Console's Generative AI report (impressions only), Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report (citations), and the AI Assistant channel in Google Analytics 4 (GA4). A vendor dashboard can add to these, not replace them.
- How many times do you run each prompt?
- AI answers change from run to run. One industry study of about 3,000 runs by volunteers found under a 1% chance that two runs returned the same list of brands. Ask for repeated runs with the date and location recorded.
- What will you actually change?
- Expect a named list: listing fixes, specific page updates, review process, crawler settings. Hidden text, bought mentions, or hundreds of new pages should end the conversation.
- Who owns the accounts?
- Your Business Profile, Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, GA4, and any tracking tool should be in your business's name, with the vendor added as a user.
A vendor who can answer these plainly is describing real work. One who can't is selling a number.
