Measuring AI Search Traffic in GA4, Search Console, and Bing

Use Google Analytics 4's built-in AI Assistant channel for visits from chatbots, and add a custom channel only for sources it misses. Read Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools for AI impressions and citations, ask new customers how they found you, and report these together each month without treating any one number as the full picture.

The operating sequence
  1. Use the AI channel

  2. Add missing sources

  3. Read Search Console

  4. Check Bing citations

  5. Ask new customers

Why this matters

Most AI influence never shows up as a neat click.

When an AI assistant recommends your business, the customer may click a link, call the number shown, or search your name later. Only the first shows up as a visit your analytics can label, and even that is sometimes recorded as direct traffic. Clicks from Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted with ordinary Google search visits, so they can't be separated in analytics at all.

That makes AI search easy to overstate or ignore. The tools have improved: Google Analytics 4 (GA4) added an AI Assistant channel in May 2026, Search Console now reports AI Overview and AI Mode impressions, and Bing Webmaster Tools shows how often Copilot cites your pages. Used together with a simple question to new customers, they give a fair picture without paying for a score nobody can verify.

Responsible practices

Combine analytics, platform reports, and customer answers.

01

Start with GA4's AI Assistant channel

In May 2026, Google added an "AI Assistant" channel to GA4's default channel group for visits from sources such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot, and Grok. It does not include Google's AI Overviews or AI Mode, which stay in Organic Search. Open Reports, then Acquisition, and look for AI Assistant in the channel list before building anything custom.

02

Add a custom channel only for what it misses

Google's help page for this channel does not list Perplexity, and other assistants may be missing. Check the Session source report; if an assistant shows up under Referral, create a custom channel group with an AI channel placed above Referral, because the first matching channel wins. Standard GA4 properties allow two custom channel groups, and they apply to past data too.

03

Use a tested source pattern

GA4 matches the whole source value, so a loose pattern can catch unrelated sites. This pattern was tested to match the main assistant domains and not match Google, Bing, Gmail, or Facebook: ^(.*\.)?(chatgpt\.com|openai\.com|perplexity\.ai|claude\.ai|copilot\.microsoft\.com|gemini\.google\.com|bard\.google\.com|deepseek\.com|grok\.com|meta\.ai|mistral\.ai|you\.com|phind\.com|poe\.com|edgeservices\.bing\.com)$ Never add bing.com or google.com, which would swallow normal search traffic.

04

Read Google's Generative AI report

Search Console's Generative AI performance report, available for all sites since August 31, 2026, shows how often your pages appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode. It shows impressions only, by page, country, device, and date, with no clicks or queries. Clicks from these features are still counted in the regular Performance report, so compare the two page by page as a rough guide.

05

Check Bing's AI Performance report

Bing Webmaster Tools shows how often your pages are cited in Copilot, Bing's AI summaries, and some partner AI experiences, with sample "grounding" questions that led to the citation. Since June 2026 it also groups questions by intent, including Local, and shows your share of citations. Bing calls citation share an observational metric, not a ranking, and it includes no traffic data.

06

Ask customers, and sample answers fairly

Add "AI assistant (ChatGPT, Gemini, etc.)" to your "How did you hear about us?" options on forms and at intake. It catches customers who saw you in an answer and then called or searched your name. Pair it with your monthly AI answer check, reported as "mentioned in X of Y runs", because single answers vary too much to track.

Worked example

A one-page monthly AI search summary

Hypothetical example: a dental practice adds a short AI section to its monthly marketing report. Numbers are illustrative; the point is what each line measures and what it cannot show.

GA4: AI Assistant and custom AI channel
38 sessions and 4 appointment requests, mostly from chatgpt.com. ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to its links, which helps those visits show the right source. Custom channel pattern in use: ^(.*\.)?(chatgpt\.com|openai\.com|perplexity\.ai|claude\.ai|copilot\.microsoft\.com|gemini\.google\.com|bard\.google\.com|deepseek\.com|grok\.com|meta\.ai|mistral\.ai|you\.com|phind\.com|poe\.com|edgeservices\.bing\.com)$
Search Console: Generative AI report
The cost-of-implants page had the most AI Overview and AI Mode impressions. No clicks are shown here; regular Search clicks to that page held steady.
Bing Webmaster Tools: AI Performance
The insurance page was cited most in Copilot answers. Sample grounding questions were about which plans the practice accepts.
New patient intake
5 of 62 new patients chose "AI assistant" as how they heard about the practice. Several also said they checked reviews before calling.
Monthly AI answer check
Mentioned in 5 of 8 runs across ChatGPT, AI Mode, and Copilot. One wrong Saturday-hours answer was traced to an old directory listing and fixed.

No single line tells the whole story, but together they show whether AI search is bringing real inquiries and which pages it relies on.

Measurement setup

Set up AI tracking you can trust.

What you can do yourself

  1. 01

Open GA4's traffic acquisition report and check whether the AI Assistant channel appears.

  2. 02

Look at Session source under Referral for assistant domains the AI channel missed.

  3. 03

Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and open the AI Performance report.

  4. 04

Open Search Console's Generative AI performance report and note your top pages.

  5. 05

Add an "AI assistant" option to your "How did you hear about us?" question.

What to ask your provider or staff to handle

  1. 01

Set up a custom AI channel above Referral using the tested pattern, and show you the before-and-after numbers.

  2. 02

Add a short AI section to your monthly report covering GA4, Search Console, Bing, and intake answers.

  3. 03

Mark leads and bookings as key events in GA4 so AI visits can be judged by inquiries, not visits alone.

Avoid these mistakes

Do not read more into the numbers than they hold.

  • Expecting AI Overview or AI Mode clicks to appear in the AI Assistant channel
  • Adding bing.com or google.com to an AI channel pattern
  • Treating Search Console AI impressions as visits
  • Reporting one chatbot answer as your "AI ranking"
  • Paying for a tracker that claims to see real customer prompts

AI assistants decide what to show, change often, and can give different answers to different people, so mentions, citations, and recommendations are not guaranteed.

Questions business owners ask

Know what each report can and cannot show.

01Why don't visits from Google's AI Overviews show in the AI Assistant channel?

Google's definition of the AI Assistant channel excludes AI Overviews and AI Mode. Those clicks are counted as Organic Search in GA4 and in the regular Search Console Performance report. The Generative AI report shows how often your pages appeared in those features, but not clicks.

02Do I still need a custom channel group now that GA4 has an AI channel?

Only if you see assistant traffic landing in Referral. Google's list covers the largest assistants but does not name every one, such as Perplexity. A custom group with the tested pattern above catches the rest, and it applies to past data as well.

03Can an AI visibility tool tell me my real ranking in ChatGPT?

No tool can see the questions real customers ask or how answers are personalized to them. Trackers send their own sample questions and report what comes back, which is useful as a trend at best. Google says no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems.

04Is AI search traffic worth tracking if it is small?

Yes, if you track it simply. For most local businesses it is a small share of visits today, but those visitors often arrive ready to book, and much AI influence shows up as calls and direct searches instead. Watch inquiries and intake answers, not just sessions.
