Google Business Profile Suspensions, Reinstatement, and Spam Reporting

If Google suspends your profile, find the rule it cites, fix the cause, and appeal once with documents that match your profile. Never create a new profile to get around it. If a competitor's listing is fake or stuffed with keywords, report it through Google's official tools.

Why this matters

Protect business control and the customer experience.

A suspension can take your profile away from customers right when they are looking for you. Hurried fixes, like changing the name back and forth or making a new profile, often make the appeal harder.

Fake and keyword-stuffed listings take calls from real businesses and mislead customers. Google gives the public several ways to report them, but each tool covers different problems.

Responsible practices

What responsible management looks like.

01

Know the common causes

Suspensions usually trace back to a guideline problem. Common ones: keywords added to the business name, a virtual office or mailbox address, a location customers can't actually visit, duplicate profiles, or a business type that isn't eligible.

02

Know which kind of restriction you have

A suspended or disabled profile has broken Google's guidelines. An account restriction suspends every profile that account manages and stops it creating or claiming others. A narrower restriction, like pausing new reviews or showing a fake-review warning, leaves the profile up but limits a feature.

03

Fix first, then appeal with matching proof

Correct the name, address, category, or other problem before appealing. Use Google's appeals tool while signed in to the account that manages the profile. Google accepts documents like a business license, registration, tax certificate, or utility bill. The name and address on them must match the profile.

04

Don't create a duplicate profile

Google tells businesses not to create a new profile for the same business while an appeal is under review. Its guidelines also forbid more than one profile for the same location.

05

Report fake or spammy competitor listings

For a listing that doesn't exist or isn't eligible, open it in Google Maps and choose Suggest an edit. For a keyword-stuffed name, suggest the real name.

For fraud involving a business name, phone number, or website, use Google's Business Redressal Complaint Form. Keep screenshots, dates, and photos of the real signage. Hypothetical example: a listing named "Best Cheap Roofer Near Me Austin" whose sign reads "Lone Star Roofing" can be reported with a photo of the sign.

What to do next

A practical profile checklist.

  1. 01

Save the email or notice from Google and note the policy it cites.

  2. 02

Compare your name, address, categories, and hours with Google's guidelines, and fix any problem.

  3. 03

Gather a business license, registration, or utility bill that matches the profile's name and address.

  4. 04

Submit one appeal through Google's appeals tool from the correct account.

  5. 05

Report fake competitor listings with Suggest an edit or the Business Redressal Complaint Form, and keep records.

Avoid these failures

Do not trade durable control for a short-term shortcut.

  • Creating a new profile for the same business while the old one is suspended
  • Appealing before fixing the name, address, or eligibility problem
  • Uploading documents whose name or address doesn't match the profile
  • Adding keywords to your own name to "compete" with spammy listings

Google makes the final call on verification, features, display, restrictions, and ranking, so no one can guarantee results. What Google controls.

Questions business owners ask

Direct answers for this responsibility.

01How long does a reinstatement take?

Timing varies. Check the appeal's status in Google's appeals tool. If the first appeal is denied, you can ask Google Business Profile support for another review with new proof.

02Can I report a competitor with a keyword-stuffed name?

Yes. Use Suggest an edit in Google Maps to propose the real name. For fraud involving a name, phone number, or website, use the Business Redressal Complaint Form. Google decides what changes.

03Will a new profile get me back online faster?

No. Google specifically says not to create a new profile for the same business while an appeal is under review.
